The Experimental Study of Meaning lab conducts experimental research on various aspects of meaning in natural language. A major current focus is the experimental study of presuppositions, supported by NSF grant BCS-1349009 to Florian Schwarz. Other phenomena currently under investigation include implicatures, definite descriptions, and domain restriction. The general approach of the lab is to take questions of importance for the theory of meaning in natural language and investigate them using tools from experimental psycholinguistics, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the integration of the study of linguistic meaning in the cognitive sciences.
